Should you use a template on the CELPIP?

Hello Reader,

A few days ago I came across a question over on Reddit that I see a version of pretty much every week. It goes like this: "My exam is in a few days, but my speaking is stuck at 8 after two attempts., I don't feel confident in my speaking. Any tips or templates that could help me?"

The common situation I see:

  • I'm stuck at [x lower than wanted score] but I need a way higher score.
  • I don't feel confident (because I keep scoring low!)
  • I have my next exam in a few days.
  • Do you have any templates that I could follow? (That will magically move me up the two or three points I need?)

That last 'magical move' bit is, of course, never said out loud or in print -but you totally know it's there. And I get it: this person just needs to improve their score as quickly as they can. Maybe their job or their PR depends on it.

In this week's podcast, I work on answering this question: Can I Get Unstuck From A 7 on the CELPIP In A Week?

And if you've ever wondered about using a template for your response, I hope this episode will change your mind!

Hello Reader, In case you missed it: In this week's podcast episode, I share one of my favourite stories about a previous client of mine named Tin who was stuck between a 7 and 8 on the speaking section of the CELPIP no matter how many times he tried. His English was strong enough to score higher, but a speech impediment kept getting in the way — not his fluency. Tin and I spent several months practicing his speaking responses again and again through voice chat, at his own pace, on his own...
