From score of 8 to a 10 — even with a speech impediment

Hello Reader,

In case you missed it: In this week's podcast episode, I share one of my favourite stories about a previous client of mine named Tin who was stuck between a 7 and 8 on the speaking section of the CELPIP no matter how many times he tried.

His English was strong enough to score higher, but a speech impediment kept getting in the way — not his fluency.

Tin and I spent several months practicing his speaking responses again and again through voice chat, at his own pace, on his own time. He showed up every single day to practice, and on his exam day, he didn't just hit his target — he scored a 10 on the speaking section of the exam! I'm so proud of him! (Tin, if you're reading this, you worked incredibly hard and totally deserve the great results you achieved!)

But now, over to you: If you've ever felt like your score doesn't reflect your real English ability, this episode is a good reminder that sometimes it's not about "trying harder," it's about practicing the right thing, consistently, in a way that actually fits how you learn. Listen to the episode here.

A person wearing a red headpiece inside a metal birdcage

Hello Reader, I was digging through a reddit thread the other day that was between someone who claimed to be native English speaker, who took the exam and passed it on their first try with an average score of 11. Their only "lower" scored area: reading at a 9. They quickly began to promote a well known CELPIP prep YouTube channel that I won't mention, but if you've been at this for a while, you've likely heard of them. The deeper the thread went the more this certain channel was getting...

Hello Reader, I am here to encourage you today to do one thing to practice your English. Not ten things. Not five things. Pick one. Then do it. 💡 Ideas: On your lunch break today, sit with other English speakers, not the folks who speak your first language, and actually engage in the conversation. As soon as you step into your workplace today, greet the first person you see and ask them what they did last night. (Bonus: come prepared to quickly talk about what YOU did last night.) The weekend...
