Do these 3 things to improve your English

Weekly Tips, Strategies and Stories to help you conquer the CELPIP Exam and Speak English Fearlessly.

Well hello there, Reader, I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to connect with you today.

Do you struggle with brainstorming on the CELPIP? This will help!

These three points will give you exactly what you need to do to start seeing your English improve!

Go where the action is. You know something? You've got an important choice to make today. (Lots of them!) You could decide to stick with your own company at lunch. You could decide to stay in your office or cubicle at work the entire day. You could decide to remain in your home with your family.

Choosing to remain on your own, or with only the people you are closest too, or away from people who speak English because you are nervous about your ability to use the English that you have - those are all options for you today.

You don't have to step outside of your comfort zone. But if you want your English skills to improve, you need to be going where the action (in English) is happening around you.

Chances are, those opportunities won’t come to you. You need to go to them - likely not very far, if you’re living in Canada, but you do need to step outside of your regular habits and comfort zone and go where you can use your English.

You need to engage. If you’re anything like me, sometimes taking that step of stepping out of your comfort zone and going to where the action is, IS A BIG STEP. I seriously know how hard that can be to ‘put yourself out there’ and surround yourself with English speakers while you might not feel very confident about your English skills yourself. But here’s the next point I need to share with you: Being where the action is isn’t enough. You actually need to engage - which means you need to use what English you have and actually begin talking with the people around you! Don't sit there quietly! Engage!

Engage - even if it's with one person. Your conversation practice in English doesn't have to be with crowds of people to be effective. Nope.

If all you can handle is one person, that's a great place to begin!

For me, I’m more of an introvert myself. I don’t gravitate towards big events where there are lots of people. I like nice and small - like two or three people.

I too am faced with the challenge of engaging!

At my workplace, for example, you’ll see me with my coffee mug filled with steaming hot coffee smiling and talking with folks, but I want to confess to you that many times I’m pushing myself HARD to get out of my comfort zone to do that.

I had to engage.

You do too!

Put in the reps. Building confidence and skill at something requires you to repeatedly try whatever skill it is you are working to master.

Doing it once or twice is not enough.

You need regular opportunities to use your English - so make sure you're getting them!

These three strategies kind of build on each other.

It's not enough to just want to improve your English - you actually need to go where the action is happening around you in English!

It's not enough to just be where there is English happening around you - you actually have to engage with the English speakers around you!

And it's not enough to engage just once. Nope. You need to practice this on a regular basis if you want to see your English improve.

Does one of these strategies resonate more with you than others? Hit reply and let me know! I'd love to hear from you.

Thank you for reading! Is there something you'd like me to cover in a future edition of the newsletter? A question about the CELPIP that you'd like answered? Just hit reply and let me know. I read and respond to every e-mail.
