The CELPIP isn't just an English exam

Hi Reader,

The CELPIP isn't just an English proficiency exam. It's also you vs the clock. Are you making any of these time sucking mistakes on your exam?

In case you missed it: Have you experienced that moment when your immigration journey in Canada takes you in a direction you never thought you'd be going in?

In my podcast this week, Ana Canseco shares how she went from being a well prepared lawyer in Mexico, to having to work as a telemarketer here in Canada! (How's that for a rocky ride?)

She highlights the difference between emotional and practical readiness for immigration, explaining how many newcomers, including herself, often underestimate the importance of having both in order to successfully settle in Canada. You can listen to her story here.

A listening workout: This is not Canadian English listening practice, but the idea of cutting to climb is powerful. We are great at adding things to our lives, but we seldom practice removing things. If you struggle with having time to practice for the CELPIP (Or your English in general!) This might helpf. (Start at 7minute 11 sec mark.)

This week's live coaching call had a mistake in the 'live' video feed, so I recorded the main ideas we covered here - and am sharing it with you today too. If you struggle with reading, especially complex text, then these ideas will help.

What section of the CELPIP do you struggle the most with?

Thank you for reading! I hope you have a fantastic week.

Aaron

PS. What if you finally decided to stop working alone to get ready for your CELPIP exam? Do it with the power of community!

Hi Reader, The worst CELPIP mistake you can make, is made one day at a time, and it can cost you years, and even your PR status. Are you making it? There's only one way to break free from this costly mistake. It also happens one day at a time. And it begins when you decide to use your English every day. No matter what. CELPIP Speaking Skill Tip: This week a client I've been working with reminded me how powerful the way you express your ideas is! (You know who you are!) A strong speaking task...

Red canoes are stacked near a mountain lake.

Hi Reader, In last week’s podcast, I talked about two things: I shared what I learned from a CELPIP webinar on Speaking Task 4, and I talked about using French to boost your PR application. Speaking Task 4: Making Predictions You can safely use “going to” or “will” — both are accepted Starts at minute 1:41 You might just boost your score if you describe where people/objects are — clearly and confidently. Starts at minute: 3:10 Short, natural-sounding conclusions are enough (no need to overdo...

A bridge extends into heavy fog.

Hi Reader, I was scared, but I did it anyway. <-- here's the proof! I have never posted videos or pictures of myself on LinkedIn. Way to far out of my comfort zone. As an introvert(ish) person, it feels far safer to hide behind text based posts and emails like this one. But that changed yesterday. Why? Because it's what I'm challenging you to do pretty frequently in here and on my podcast: if you want to see your English and CELPIP skills get stronger, you must take more risks with your...
