Can (Should?) ChatGPT help you with your English?

Hello Reader,

I'm curious. Like SUPER curious. So I'm asking you. Yes you! Do you use ChatGPT to help you with your English skills?

To help you study for the CELPIP?

As a conversation buddy?

I'm asking because I've met listeners to my podcast who have tried using AI for their practice. To be honest, they didn't seem thrilled with the results.

Their general opinion felt like they got inconsistent answers, and often tougher grading that was more discouraging than helpful from AI.

For me, and my experiments with it, I've found that it never sounds like me. And that's a problem. When people read the words I write, or listen to the things I share on my podcast, I want them to hear and read my words. The way I would say and write them.

My style.

My personality.

My voice.

If you're preparing for the CELPIP, test raters want the same thing. You, and your use of English.

I don't think AI should be avoided 100%.

I do use it. But just not to create 100% of the thing that I'm working on.

Brainstorming? Sure.

Working on strategy? Sure.

But actually creating the newsletter or podcast or blog pots - nope. That's 100% me.

What about you? How do you use AI?

Hello Reader, One of the easiest ways to do better on many of the CELPIP speaking tasks, is to simply remember: you've done this before! You've likely given someone advice before, right? (That's task 1.) You've likely shared a story about something that happened to you before. (That's task 2.) I could go on. The point: don't let the CELPIP freak you out because it's a big language exam. (And I know...I know...it is a big language exam that has a lot riding on it!) But remember this: you've...

Hello Reader, If I could tell you anything about learning how to speak English, it would be this: Fear never really goes away. Fear of making a mistake. Fear of forgetting what to say in English right in the middle of big presentation, or an important conversation. Fear of grammar flops. Fear of looking and feeling like a fool in front of someone else. Yep. It never really goes away. This is especially true if you're an introvert like me. Even in English, my first language, I am usually in a...
